I distinctly remember speaking to my business coach a while back and explaining to her how my whole life, I’ve felt like I was trudging through mud. I could clearly see where I wanted to go, what I wanted to achieve, and even how I was going to get there. But as I took each step forward, I felt a constant sense of resistance—like something was holding me back.
I was stubborn and persistent enough to push through anyway, but I couldn’t shake the question: Why? If I’m excited about where I’m going and fully committed to taking action, why does it feel like I’m making the journey infinitely harder on myself? What inside me isn’t on board?
For anyone who has been to therapy, spent time self-reflecting, or uncovered the world of the unconscious, the answer is glaringly obvious. We all carry a blueprint through which we understand life and ourselves. This blueprint—formed in our earliest, most impressionable years—shapes how we navigate the world. It’s often based on experiences we didn’t fully understand at the time, when we lacked the judgment or maturity to question them.
That blueprint lives in the subconscious, running on autopilot and telling us countless stories about who we are and what we’re capable of. Stories like:
“I am unlovable.”
“I am a failure.”
“The world is unsafe, so I need to protect myself by staying small.”
“I don’t have what it takes.”
“I am not enough.”
The variety of these stories is endless, but the common thread is this: they hold us back. I’ve worked with clients who are kind, accomplished, and resilient—people who’ve achieved incredible things in the face of adversity. And yet, no matter how much they’ve done or how admirable they are, every one of them carries a story of not enoughness.
As an outsider, it doesn’t add up. You want to say, “But look! Look at everything you’ve done! Look at the person you are!” But that’s the thing—these subconscious stories don’t have to make sense. They’re not based on logic. They’re the culmination of seemingly small moments: being picked last in gym class, a well-meaning family member making a hurtful comment, a teacher misunderstanding your talents, or a parent being too busy to show affection. At some point, we decided those moments meant something about us. Those meanings became our truth, our blueprint for navigating the world and our place in it.
Here’s the kicker: 95% of what we do and are is governed by our subconscious mind. Even when we consciously decide to change—whether it’s being kinder to ourselves, pursuing a new career, or leaving behind old patterns—the subconscious can act like a resistant co-pilot, pulling us back toward what’s familiar.
This is why change often feels so hard. You set your intention, make your plan, and start moving forward. And for a little while, it feels exciting and full of possibility. But then resistance shows up: unease creeps in, old habits resurface, and the momentum fades. Your nervous system protests because this new life feels unfamiliar and unsafe, even if it’s exactly what you want.
Some people stop at this point. Others fight tooth and nail for their dreams. I was one of the fighters, constantly pushing forward despite feeling like something inside me was working against me. I came to realize that my biggest obstacle wasn’t the external world—it was me. Specifically, the subconscious blueprint that no longer aligned with the person I wanted to become.
So, that brings us to the million-dollar question: How? How do you get your subconscious self on board with the changes you’re trying to make? How do you stop fighting yourself?
If you’re here reading this, I’m guessing you’re tired of the inner tug-of-war. I don’t blame you—it’s exhausting. But here’s the good news: the beliefs that hold you back are yours to change. Just like you created them, you have the power to let them go and replace them with new, empowering ones.
And that’s where hypnosis comes in.
Hypnosis offers a different path. Instead of battling your subconscious, it helps you work with it, rewiring beliefs at the source so that your mind and body support your goals instead of resisting them. In the next post, I’ll explore exactly how hypnosis works, why it’s so effective, and how you can use it to unlock the life you’ve been dreaming of. Stay tuned!
